When Yvette Salum and her husband, Hugo, stepped into entrepreneurship, they didn’t start with a business plan dreamed up in isolation. They started with a promise rooted in community.
“People helped us when we first moved here,” Salum recalled, describing the small moments that shaped their early life in the Loris, South Carolina, area. Neighbors lent tools. They pitched in to bush-hog the grass before the couple even had the equipment big enough for the job. One neighbor – who charged just $50 to mow their lawn – didn’t just help with work, he helped with relief. For Salum, that level of kindness didn’t fade with time, but became the blueprint.
HD Pro Services labels itself as local home improvement experts with services focusing on pressure washing, decks and outdoor projects, landscaping and yard maintenance, remodeling, and home repairs. Their basic remodeling services include flooring, painting, windows, and doors, and more.
When Salum launched HD Pro Services in April 2026, the goal was not simply “getting customers.” It was to earn trust the way their neighbors had once earned theirs: with follow-through, consistency, and fair treatment.
In a field where customers sometimes feel like they’re gambling between estimates, empty promises, and missed appointments – HD Pro Services chose a different approach.
Salum emphasized three things that they treat as non-negotiables:
Communication you can count on - texting/calling back, setting expectations early
Integrity in what they can and can’t do - no overselling, no pretending they’ll deliver what they won’t
Consistency in showing up - and if something changes, they’ll let the customer know.
That approach didn’t come from theory, but it came from experience and a clear understanding of what too many people in the industry have come to accept. “We’re owner-operated,” she said. “So, if you’re calling, you are talking to decision makers,” she explained. Their structure includes both of them for the core work, with trusted help when larger jobs require it – which is part of how they protect the service quality they’re proud of. Their customers notice. Salum describes how people often tell them they didn’t expect the company they hired to actually arrive when promised, or respond the way they said they would. The reaction is almost disarming – part gratitude and part relief.
Starting a business is rarely as simple as getting good at the work. For HD Pro Services’ first months, the couple learned quickly that entrepreneurship has “startup costs” that can surprise even experienced entrepreneurs. Licensing and insurance weren’t simply line items; they became reality checks. Tires can go flat. Motors can burn out. Equipment can fail at the worst possible times. Even service pricing became a learning curve. “We undercharged this job,” Salum said – explaining how they adjusted estimates as they got better at calculating material costs, labor, and real numbers behind the scenes. Mulch quantities for large properties for instance, required math and precision that didn’t feel natural until they had to do it. Alongside that came full administrative workloads like managing the books, schedules, compliance, and tasks that show up in before and after photos. The highs kept them moving, and the experience has been eye-opening for Salum.
Working closely with a spouse adds a special kind of pressure. But the real solution isn’t to argue. It was structuring roles. Hugo, her husband, leads in the field, while Yvette focuses on the administrative backbone. The result is the partnership where feedback flows without turning into friction. Even when they’re working in extreme weather conditions, and moments cause pause, they “find a way to bring the business back to clarity quickly,” Salum shared. Their trust is practical: Hugo’s field judgment is his strength and the foundation of the business is Yvette’s.
Although having formed this year, HD Pro Services didn’t grow by chasing attention. They grew by earning it. Early on, they relied on door knocking and handing out cards. They used social media to show proof including videos, photos and real progress – because as Salum puts it, “I’m not purchasing anything without a review.” For Salum, the best validation is when service is dependable, honest, and people don’t just hire you: they refer you.
In the next five to 10 years, Salum wants to grow their team and clientele. Also, they want to be in a position to have maintenance drives. Salum knows what it means to delay repairs until they become urgent. A leaky faucet. A problem that quietly turns into a larger one. She believes that maintenance support is what keeps homes stable and stops people (especially elderly) from carrying burdens alone.
“You hear about food drives and clothes drives. But no one talks about maintenance drives. Some people, especially our elderly, may already own their homes and be financially stable to a certain degree, but they can’t afford lawn care,” she explained – emphasizing that the economy is tough for everyone and HD Pro Services wants to be able to offer landscaping services to those who need extra support. They want to partner with community sponsors, friends, family, and community members to support their efforts in these types of drives.
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to just go for it. “Everything is hard and unexpected. There’s only so much planning you can do before you just have to do it.” Comparable to other life choices like preparing for a baby or getting married – doing everything that you think you’ll need, only to discover what you truly need once life begins. Entrepreneurship is similar, according to Salum. You can adapt. Think on your feet. Learn what works and keep going anyway.
When asked to describe HD Pro Services in three core values, Salum chooses words that reflect their customers' experiences: Integrity, Communication, Quality. Not slogans or sales pitches.
In Salum’s view, the business doesn’t win when it promises the most. It wins when it does the most reliable thing it can do: show up, treat customers honestly, and deliver work that holds up long after the job is done.
